CUTS AND SCRAPES
Cuts and scrapes, also known as lacerations and abrasions, are common types of skin injuries that occur when the skin is broken or rubbed away.
- Bleeding
- Pain or stinging sensation
- Redness and swelling around the wound
- Dirt, debris, or other foreign material in the wound
Clean the Wound
- Rinse the area with clean, running water to remove any dirt, debris, or contaminants.
- Use a mild soap and a clean washcloth or gauze to gently clean the wound.
- Stop the bleeding:
- Apply firm, direct pressure to the wound using a clean cloth or gauze.
- Elevate the wounded area above the level of the heart, if possible.
Apply an Antiseptic
- Use an over-the-counter antibiotic ointment to help prevent infection.
- Cover the wound:
- Apply a sterile bandage or adhesive strip to keep the wound clean and protected.
- Monitor for signs of infection:
- Watch for increased redness, swelling, warmth, or pus, which may indicate an infection.
- Seek medical attention if the wound is deep, won’t stop bleeding, or shows signs of infection.
Caring for Cuts and Scrapes
- Keep the wound clean and change the bandage regularly.
- Avoid picking at scabs, as this can slow healing and increase the risk of infection.
- Apply a moisturizer to the area once the wound has closed to help prevent scarring.
- Seek medical attention if the wound is deep, won’t stop bleeding, or shows signs of infection, such as increased redness, swelling, warmth, or pus.
