MONONUCLEOSIS

Mononucleosis, commonly known as “mono,” is a viral infection that primarily affects adolescents and young adults. Mononucleosis is usually caused by the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), a member of the herpesvirus family. The virus is spread through contact with saliva, such as sharing drinks, and utensils, or kissing someone who has an active infection. It can also be transmitted through coughing, sneezing, or other respiratory secretions. Mononucleosis is typically diagnosed through a blood test that detects the presence of specific antibodies to the Epstein-Barr virus. In some cases, a physical examination and review of symptoms may be sufficient for diagnosis.

Most people with mononucleosis recover within 2-4 weeks, although some may experience fatigue and weakness for several more weeks. In rare cases, complications like liver inflammation or neurological issues may occur. 

After the initial infection, the Epstein-Barr virus remains dormant in the body, and it is possible to experience reactivation of the virus later in life.
