SINUS INFECTION

A sinus infection, also known as sinusitis, is an inflammation or infection of the sinuses. The sinuses are air-filled cavities located around the nose, cheeks, and forehead. Sinus infections are commonly caused by viruses, bacteria, or fungi.

- Facial pain or pressure: The pain or pressure is often localized around the cheeks, forehead, or between the eyes.
- Nasal congestion: The nasal passages may feel blocked or congested, making it difficult to breathe through the nose.
- Thick nasal discharge: The mucus that is produced may be thick, yellow, or green, and may drain from the nose or down the back of the throat (postnasal drip).
- Headache: Sinus headaches are often described as a dull, throbbing pain in the forehead, temples, or behind the eyes.
- Cough: A persistent cough may develop, especially if the postnasal drip irritates the throat.
- Reduced sense of smell and taste: Inflammation in the sinuses can affect the sense of smell and taste.
- Fatigue: Sinus infections can cause fatigue and a general feeling of being unwell.

- Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of fluids, such as water or warm herbal tea, to help thin the mucus and promote drainage.
- Nasal irrigation: Use a saline nasal rinse or a neti pot to flush out the nasal passages and relieve congestion. This can help remove irritants, thin the mucus, and promote healing.
- Steam inhalation: Inhaling steam from a bowl of hot water or using a humidifier can help moisturize the nasal passages, relieve congestion, and soothe inflamed sinuses.
- Warm compresses: Applying warm compresses to the face can help alleviate facial pain and pressure.
- Over-the-counter pain relievers: Medications such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, can help reduce pain and inflammation associated with sinusitis. Follow the recommended dosage and consult a healthcare professional if needed.
- Nasal decongestant sprays: Over-the-counter nasal decongestant spray can temporarily relieve nasal congestion. However, these should only be used for a few days, as prolonged use can lead to rebound congestion.
- Rest and self-care: Get plenty of rest to help your body fight off the infection. Avoid irritants such as cigarette smoke, allergens, and pollutants that can worsen symptoms.
- Warm liquids and soothing foods: Consuming warm liquids like broth or herbal teas and eating soothing foods such as soups and non-spicy dishes can provide relief and comfort.
- Antibiotics: If there is a concern for bacterial infection, your provider may need to prescribe antibiotic treatment
