STREP THROAT

Strep throat is a specific type of bacterial infection that causes inflammation and pain in the throat. It is caused by the bacteria known as Streptococcus pyogenes, also called group A Streptococcus.

- Severe sore throat
- Painful swallowing
- Red and swollen tonsils
- White or yellow spots on the back of the throat
- Swollen and tender lymph nodes in the neck
- Fever (usually higher than 101°F)
- Headache
- Fatigue or general malaise
- Sometimes, a rash (scarlet fever) may also be present.
If you suspect you have strep throat, it is important to come in for a proper diagnosis. We can perform a rapid strep test, which involves swabbing the back of your throat to check for the presence of streptococcal bacteria. In some cases, a throat culture may be needed for confirmation.

- Antibiotics: Strep throat is usually treated with antibiotics, such as penicillin or amoxicillin. It is important to complete the full course of antibiotics as prescribed to ensure the infection is completely eradicated.
- Symptom relief: Over-the-counter pain relievers like acetaminophen or ibuprofen can help alleviate throat pain, reduce fever, and relieve other associated symptoms. Gargling with warm salt water and using throat lozenges may also provide temporary relief.
- Rest and hydration: Getting plenty of rest and staying hydrated by drinking fluids can promote healing and relieve discomfort.
- Contagion prevention: It is important to practice good hygiene, such as frequent handwashing, covering your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing, and avoiding close contact with others, especially during the contagious period (usually the first 24 to 48 hours after starting antibiotics).

It’s worth noting that strep throat is highly contagious, and individuals with the infection should avoid close contact with others until they have been on antibiotics for at least 24 hours and their symptoms have improved.
If left untreated, strep throat can lead to complications such as, but not limited to, tonsillitis, sinus infections, ear infections, rheumatic fever, or kidney problems. Therefore, it is important to seek medical attention and follow the prescribed treatment.
