Wounds and burns are two types of injuries that can occur to the skin and underlying tissues. Listed below are different types of wounds and burns.
Cuts (Lacerations):
- Caused by sharp objects that slice the skin
- May bleed heavily and require stitches in some cases
- Scrapes (Abrasions):
- Caused by friction that rubs away the top layer of skin
- Often occur from falls or brushing against rough surfaces
- Puncture Wounds:
- Caused by pointed objects that pierce the skin
- Can be deep and may damage underlying tissues
- Avulsions:
- Occur when a piece of skin or tissue is partially or completely torn off
- Clean the wound with soap and water to remove dirt and debris
- Apply an antibiotic ointment and cover with a sterile bandage
- Monitor for signs of infection, such as increased redness, swelling, or pus
- Seek medical attention if the wound is deep, won’t stop bleeding, or shows signs of infection
Thermal Burns:
- Caused by contact with hot objects, liquids, or flames
- Can range from mild (first-degree) to severe (third-degree)
- Chemical Burns:
- Caused by exposure to corrosive or acidic substances
- Require immediate flushing with water to dilute the chemical
- Electrical Burns:
- Caused by contact with electrical current
- Can damage internal tissues, even if the skin appears unharmed
- Cool the burned area with cool (not cold) water for 10-20 minutes
- Remove any clothing or jewelry from the affected area
- Cover the burn with a sterile, non-adhesive bandage
- Seek immediate medical attention for severe burns or those involving the face, hands, feet, or genitals
