UPPER RESPIRATORY INFECTIONS
(COMMON COLD)

(COMMON COLD)
An upper respiratory infection (URI), also known as the common cold or a viral respiratory infection, is a contagious infection that affects the nose, throat, sinuses, and upper airways. It is primarily caused by viruses, most commonly rhinoviruses.

- Runny or stuffy nose
- Sore throat
- Mild headache
- Fatigue or feeling generally unwell
- Sneezing
- Cough
- Mild body aches
- Low-grade fever (less common)

It’s important to note that antibiotics are not effective against viral infections like the common cold. Treatment for a URI typically involves managing the symptoms and allowing the infection to run its course. Some self-care measures that can help alleviate symptoms include:
- Resting and getting plenty of sleep
- Drinking fluids to stay hydrated
- Using over-the-counter pain relievers such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen to relieve fever, headache, and body aches
- Gargling with warm salt water to soothe a sore throat
- Using saline nasal sprays or rinses to alleviate nasal congestion
- Using an over-the-counter cough syrup or lozenges to relieve cough
- Practicing good hygiene, such as washing hands frequently and avoiding close contact with others when sick, can help prevent the spread of upper respiratory infections.
- Electrocardiogram (EKG)
