RSV
RSV, or Respiratory Syncytial Virus, is a common respiratory virus that can infect the lungs and airways. It is a leading cause of respiratory illness in young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems.

Treatment for RSV focuses on relieving symptoms and supporting the body’s immune response.
- Rest: Get plenty of rest to help your body recover.
- Hydration: Drink fluids like water, herbal teas, and clear broths to stay hydrated.
- Over-the-counter medications: Medications such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help reduce fever, relieve body aches, and alleviate headaches. However, over-the-counter cough and cold medications are generally not recommended for children.
- Prescription medications: Prescription corticosteroids and bronchodilators can help decrease inflammation and help open up the airways. Antiviral drugs such as Ribavirin have been used in severe cases but its efficacy is limited.
- Symptom relief: Gargling with warm salt water, using throat lozenges, using saline nasal sprays, and using a humidifier can help alleviate sore throat, nasal congestion, and cough.
For most healthy adults and older children, RSV causes mild, cold-like symptoms that resolve within a week or two. However, it can be much more serious for certain high-risk groups, including:
- Premature infants
- Young children (especially under 2 years old)
- Older adults, especially those with heart or lung disease
- People with weakened immune systems
- In these groups, RSV can lead to bronchiolitis (inflammation of the small airways) or pneumonia, which may require hospitalization.
Preventive measures like hand washing and avoiding contact with sick individuals are recommended.
